about

It's only just turned 2022 but for artists like London-based Real Tears he might as well be in 2080. Stepping up for his debut EP on ESC_, we are sending you far into the future with V.A.L.I.S (Vast Active Living Intelligence System). Best known for his fusion of neo grime, RnG and club tracks, stacked with sparkling melodies and captivating basslines, Real Tears is an artist you should be paying attention to. The V.A.L.I.S EP serves as the 9th instalment on the label's discography and marks a new level that ESC_ continues to rise.

The EP kicks off with 'Be Here', a track that would make anyone think about texting their ex. It takes inspiration from many avenues, combining the new sounds of wave, hooky RnG-style female vocals and crisp grime drums - all complemented by an irresistible dash of hardstyle sprinkled in the mid-section.

'Place Go' is the evil twin of 'Be Here'. Whereas the first track pulls at your heartstrings, 'Place Go' kicks down your front door and runs rampage in your gaff. Falling back on the roots of grime, Real Tears carefully selects a handful of prestige sounds to create a track that will knock the roof off any building. Powered by a weighty sub-bass and impeccable drums, this is one track that will find its way into a plethora of DJ's set-lists.

Third, in the list, we have the EP's title track, 'V.A.L.I.S' - a track more technical than the Terminator's blue-orbed teleportation system. Its fast-paced drum design, overlapped with extra-terrestrial styled arpeggiators, makes this song feel like it's been plucked straight out of a futuristic warzone. The standoff between synths and leads throughout the track showcases Real Tears as a producer who knows what listeners want - and what they didn't know they needed.

Last in the EP, we have 'Don't Want U'. This anthemic track sets a standard that most RnG and Neo-Grime artists dream of hitting in their instrumentals. Similar to the EP's opener, 'Don't Want U' uses the focus of female vocal hooks to channel you into a deeper sense of personal emotion, whilst its techy drum programming and atmosphere drives these feelings into a sense of progression and growth. Equipped with a piano-led outro, 'Don't Want U' rounds off the EP with a euphoria-drenched farewell.

Not many artists can kick your emotions with a big boot and describe how you're feeling musically, but in Real Tears' case, the majority of us can agree that this is one artist that fits the bill.
